Manchester Airport boosted by over 500 job opportunities following mass exodus of staff during pandemic

  • Hundreds of roles to be made available at Manchester Airport following easing of travel restrictions for UK citizens

Manchester Airport has announced a jobs boost and is looking to recruit 500 people in security, customer services and hospitality positions.

Hundreds of extra jobs are set to be made available with more than 12 other business operating at the airport, including retail operators, recognisable brands, and numerous eateries.

This job fair tomorrow comes after almost 500 people lost their jobs at the airport in 2020, with up to 1,000 more employees forced into taking pay cuts to maintain their role.

Cath Bailey, the airport’s chief people officer, said: “We’re really pleased to be holding this jobs fair to give as many people as possible access to the wide range of amazing opportunities we have on offer.

“With travel restrictions having been eased, we are expecting customer demand to bounce back very quickly and are recruiting ahead of what we hope will be a busy summer.”

Pre-pandemic, Manchester Airport was the third busiest airport in the UK flying out nearly 30m passengers a year to more than 210 destinations.

However during the pandemic the airport only recorded 2.8 million passengers in the same 12-month time frame.

Airport boss Charlie Cornish said last year: “International travel is being unfairly scapegoated (by the government), with tens of thousands of jobs placed at risk in the process.

“We’re stuck with a system that is clearly not fit for purpose and will deny people the opportunity to travel abroad this year.”

During the pandemic up to 2,000 people were told their jobs were at risk at the airport, with many of those affected being residents in Wythenshawe.

The jobs fair takes place at Old Trafford cricket ground between 10am and 3pm tomorrow (10 Feb). Attendees can book a slot on the job fair’s Eventbrite page.
