  • Village FC progress to the semi-final of the GFSN Cup with a 3-0 win over Leicester Wildecats
  • Goals from Dan Hodgson, Kev Robinson, and Fernando Martins
  • Village FC are reigning Champions of the GFSN Cup and look to win it for a record fourth time

Village FC have beaten Leicester Wildecats 3-0 in the quarter final of the Gay Football Supporters’ Network Cup.

The win takes them one step closer to a record fourth GFSN Cup title, provided they win their final two games.

Not only that, but success in the Cup would see Village FC win the competition for the second time on the bounce.

Goals from Dan Hodgson and Kev Robinson meant Village went into the break 2-0 up after a well contested first 45 minutes.

A third goal early in the second half by Fernando Martins helped seal the win.

Even before ball was kicked the game was likely to go either way, with both sides having to deal with poor weather conditions and a wet surface.

A physical start to the game meant Village FC were able to win multiple free kicks causing an issue for Wildecats early on.

And it was only a matter of time before one paid off. This time a deep free kick from Village keeper, Jeremy Baker fizzed across the wet surface and found the feet of Dan Hodgson just outside the box.

The number 12 brought the ball down well and smashed it on the half volley, taking a deflection off the defender. The ball looped over the Wildecats keeper who was left to watch as it flew into the top right corner, making it 1-0 to Village FC on the 16th minute mark.

However, the early goal seemed to wake Leicester Wildecats up and the away team began to dominate in possession, creating some good chances.

The best of which came from their left back, Ryan who looked to lob the keeper from 25 yards out, only to be stopped by Jeremy Baker who managed to get a hand to heroically tip it over the bar for a corner.

Nonetheless, Leicester would live to rue their missed chances as Village found a second just before half time.

Another free kick, this time taken by Chris Telling made its way into the box and straight over the Wildecats keeper who completely misjudged it, leaving Kev Robinson to put the ball into an empty net with the last kick of the half. 2-0 to Village FC.

Despite the first half being evenly matched, with Leicester still in it, Village FC put the game to bed just 10 minutes into the second half and secured their place in the semi-final.

It was Fernando Martins who received the ball on his back foot before magnificently turning the Wildecats defender. The skill opened yards of space for the forward who hit a worldie on his right from just inside the box. The ball smashed the inside of the post and found the back of the net, making it 3-0 to Village FC.

For the remainder of the game Village finally began to put some good passes together and confidently held out until the final whistle.
