  • Thousands take to streets to voice their opposition to sentences

Sixth form students from Manchester have been caught up in mass protests in Barcelona over the jailing of separatist politicians.

Thousands of people in the Catalan capital have taken to the streets over the past couple of days in protest at the sentences handed out to those calling for independence from Spain.
College student Ruby Porter, 17, said: “It was very exciting to see the demonstrations. We all got our phones out to take pictures and videos.

“We’re on a geography field trip and were just walking through the centre of Barcelona when we got caught up in the protests.

“It was very noisy but also very friendly – we weren’t scared and everyone was really nice to us.”
