MMU Rugby are ready for Varsity

In what is looking like an event not to be missed, The Northern Quota went along to Platt Lane Sports Complex to talk to some of the players that will be involved in the matches tomorrow.

There has been a visible buzz around MMU over the last few days as the University’s rugby union teams prepare to go head-to-head against the University of Manchester. With over 700 tickets sold by MMU alone, and more expected to sell before the games start, it seems many are preparing to go and watch a potential historic MMU victory over our Oxford Road neighbours.

Being played at the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford, transport is available from the Union on Higher Cambridge Street. Buses are expected to be leaving at intervals of 4:30pm, 5:30pm, 6:30pm and 7:15pm for £2 return.

Spectators are also being urged to join the players at the After Party at the Union following the games. Entry is £3 on the door and you can expect a typical AU night following the two high-quality games.

Harrison Brown-Raw talked to us about the MMU Sport Scholarship Scheme and told us how crucial it had been to have access to the Physiotherapy and Strength and Conditioning suite at Platt Lane for recovery and game preparation.

Alicia Green, Sports Coordinator for MMU Sport, had this to say about the team’s preparations.

“The games have been long anticipated for our rugby union teams and we have been really impressed with their professionalism towards the event and the work they have put in not only on the pitch but also in organising such a large-scale event,” she said.

Sophie Binder, Activities Officer for Manchester, is expecting the win brought home for MMU Sport.

“We fully back our men’s and women’s team and believe that with the quality of players and effort they have put in during the pre BUCS season that they can both excel in their games this Friday,” she told us.

The games on Friday will be brought live to you via Twitter. Follow @NorthernQuota for updates.
