Match Report (Women’s Champions League): Fortuna Hjorring 0-1 Manchester City Women
- City pick up from where they left off with a 1:0 first leg win over Danish champions Fortuna
- Superstar Carli Lloyd gives City advantage going into the second leg
Manchester City Women’s new superstar Carli Lloyd found the back of the net in her first game to give the Blues the advantage in their Champions League campaign final first leg against Fortuna Hjorring.
The American international – twice FIFA World Player of the Year – headed home nine minutes before the interval to put the Blues in a strong position against the Danish champions going into next week’s second leg.
Lloyd found the net after meeting a perfectly weighted cross from the wing by Scottish international Jane Ross after good build-up play by central midfielder Jill Scott .
City should have gone into next week’s second leg with more than a 1-0 advantage, but the Fortuna keeper Maria Christensen proved to be tough to beat. She kept out efforts from Lloyd in the first half and Lucy Bronze and second half substitute Nikita Parris after the interval.
Blues ‘keeper Karen Bardsley, who has been tremendous throughout the tournament, had little to do throughout the game, but when called upon kept the Danish side at bay. She tipped away a cross by Fortuna’s Caroline Moller which veered dangerously towards goal.
City managed to see the game out and now have a vital one goal cushion over the Danish side going into the second leg at the Etihad Stadium next Thursday evening.
This will be City Women’s biggest game to date at home, and I’ll be providing live coverage of the game on social media and reports and reaction pieces for Northern Quota.
Fortuna have proved to be City’s toughest opponents so far in the competition, and next week’s game will be a thrilling occasion with a place in the Champions League semi-finals at stake. Tickets are priced £6. Don’t miss it!
