Man found guilty of ‘callous’ murder after dousing mother in petrol and setting her alight

A son has been found guilty of the murder of his 63-year-old mother after starting a fire at their Gorton home last year.
Mark See, 34, was drunk and abusive towards both his mother, Sandra See, and pregnant fiancée Natalie Hughes, before the murder.
After a ‘furious, drunken argument,’ See set their home alight using a six pint milk bottle that contained petrol for their lawnmower and made no attempt to call the emergency services after fleeing the scene.
Senior investigating officer, Phil Reade, said: “Sandra was murdered in her own home by her son who callously doused her in petrol, setting her alight and then fled from the scene as fast as he could.”
Ms Hughes, who acted as his mother’s carer, escaped the blaze but stayed to call 999. See fled towards Manchester Airport.
Firefighters arrived on the scene at 2.30am on 13 Julky last year. Mrs See was so badly burnt that she had to be identified by a metal plate inserted in her leg.
See was found 16 hours later in a church yard on Sunbank Lane with burns to his hands and feet.
He was found guilty at Manchester Crown Court this week and faces a life sentence.
Officer Reade added: “Throughout the trial See has lacked the courage to face up to his actions, causing further pain and distress to his family.
“But I hope today’s verdict brings them some comfort and justice for the death of their beloved mother.”
