Donald’s Trump’s historic win in yesterday’s US election has sparked widespread controversy, with Mancunian people giving their verdict on the new president.
Trump’s victory saw him win 279 states in his favour, despite the unconventional policies he plans to lead with.
NQ interviewed people in Manchester for their views on Trump’s election victory.
Akiya Connor, an 18-year-old student at Man Met, said: “I think a lot of people are going to suffer, especially with the abortion laws.”
Darren Drew-Smith, 54, a marketing director from Cheshire, said: “Maybe Biden dipped out too late and Harris hasn’t had enough time to get her campaign going.”
Jake Lewis, a 21-year-old student at Man Met, said: “It seems people in America are more interested in guns than human rights.”
John Jeffries, 40, a builder from Wigan, said: “It is a selection, not an election” but added that ‘’it will be brilliant for our country’’.
Fellow builder Matt, 26, believes Trump’s victory was ‘’because of immigration”.
Dave Gardener, a retired 71 year old from Cornwall, said: “I think this will have an impact on the whole world. I can honestly see this being the last election in the United States if he gets away with it.”
Martha and Isabel, 19 and 20-year-old students living in Fallowfield, said: “People voted for Trump because they’re uneducated. It’s been shown that most of the states that voted red are not as educated as the blue states.”
Manish, a 26-year-old from India currently studying a masters degree at Man Met, said: “I was hoping Kamala might win, but it’s good to see Trump in power again. I feel he is more of a straightforward guy. He is doing what he says he will.”
Building concierge Jez Ure, 59, said: “It’s a bit disappointing, really. I think it’s an unwise choice and I’m not a fan of it.”
Uninformed
Plumber Harrison Camp, 21, said: “I think the people of America are ill-informed and easily led by an attention-seeking individual.”
Asked why would people vote for Kamala Harris, Nicholas Barlow, a 19-year-old student at Man Met, said it was because “she’s not Trump”.
He thought people voted for Trump “because they like guns and hate immigrants”.
However, James Oliver, 45, of Manchester, believes Trump will be “good for the [United states] as a whole. He’s probably got some good things in the pipeline. I guess the proof is in the pudding, we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Trump is a ‘buffoon’
He believed the reason for Trump’s victory was because “he’s very big on illegal immigrants, maybe the people in the country that voted for him have gone down that path”.
Layla Harris, 45, of Kendal, said: “Hopefully everyone will laugh at the Americans like when we voted Boris back in. People will be distracted by his buffoonery and it will be all right”
However, she added: “It could be catastrophic, we could be sliding into World War Three.”
Will Jewett-Pittham 20, a student in Manchester, believes women may be in jeopardy because of Trump’s anti-abortion policies: “I don’t think a man should be saying anything that a woman can or can’t do with their body. It’s not really a man’s place”.
Abortion laws
Student Ukiya Connor, 18, believes Trump’s success is due to ‘’the older generation voting more, young people are not involved in the elections and people are uneducated”.
She said: ‘’More people will suffer due to the abortion law’.’
