#TakeControl Campaign launches – put your health in your hands

  • #TakeControl aims to inform gamers about the risks they face
  • According to our survey, only 30% of people are aware that depression can be an issue due to gaming
  • 20% of people had no idea of any of the health issues caused by gaming

Welcome to the launch of the #TakeControl campaign! The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness of the health problems that are caused due to gaming.

In 2017, the gaming industry made $108.4bn in revenues. Yes, that’s right. Over 100 billion dollars. In 2018, it took in revenues over 130 billion dollars. It is a hugely successful industry that is growing year upon year, with an estimate of over 2 billion users in the community.

We are not trying to stop people from gaming. That is not the objective at all. Gaming is a great way to immerse yourself in a whole other world or distract you from the trials and tribulations of everyday life. It is a form of escapism which we all love to enjoy.

Gaming can also be helpful to use for experiments. For example, Prof. Dilwyn Marple-Horvat, a Professor of Motor Neuroscience at Manchester Metropolitan University, uses a gaming simulator in which participants are asked to play Colin McRae Rally 2 in various conditions. This simulation has been used in experiments regarding drink driving and diabetes, which has helped to discover new, important findings on both topics.

Whether you are a full-time or casual gamer, we hope that this campaign reaches as wide an audience as possible. We believe this campaign is important as it will offer information to gamers which we hope they will take on board to reduce the effects of gaming on their health, so they can enjoy their hobby or profession safely.

Keep up to date with our campaign on the website and on social media. You can find all of this information on the homepage of our campaign website here.
