Old Trafford falls silent in memory of Munich victims

  • Memorial service to begin at 2.40pm
  • Minute's silence planned for 3.04pm

Tributes are taking place today at Old Trafford today in memory of the 23 people who died in the Munich air disaster.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the darkest day in the history of Manchester United and people across the globe have been playing their respect to the Busby Babes.

The theatre of dreams will stand still in a minute’s silence at 3.04pm, aligning with the exact time of the 1958 crash.

Flowers have been laid outside the stadium throughout the day and a ceremony is also commencing at 2.40pm. The service is available live and free on MUTV, and will also feature footage from the tributes taking place in Munich and Belgrade.

Current Manchester United players have also combined with children from the club’s foundation to produce a heartfelt video, reading a poem in the Babes memory.

Some fans have travelled to Munich to be a part of services taking place across the city.

Tributes on social media have also poured in from the world of football using the hashtag, #flowersofmanchester

MMU will host a remembrance evening at the Business School tomorrow night, featuring multimedia tributes to those who lost their lives. One of the multimedia pieces to be showcased tomorrow is available here.
