Record number attend MMU Sport Scholars event at Etihad

  • MMU welcomes record number of 60 scholars to sport scholarship
  • Scholars include paralympic champion Kadeena Cox
  • Gold medallists Joanna Rowsell-Shand and Michael Jones also on the scholarship programme

A record number of scholars attended MMU’s Sport Scholars welcoming event last night at the Etihad Stadium.

A total of 60 scholars and five sports ambassadors, including gold medallists Kadeena Cox, Joanna Rowsell-Shand and Michael Jones, gathered in the Legends suite at the stadium for the annual event.

Paralympic champion Kadeena Cox, who is returning to the university to study Physiotherapy, said: “MMU is in Manchester which is a great city, the sports scholarship programme is very supportive, and the course I’m doing, I just love the way it’s set out.

“The university itself is very supportive, they have helped a lot with my balance of sport and university life, which has been really good.”

The evening offered the athletes the chance to socialise with fellow scholars through a variety of fun icebreakers and networking opportunities.

The scholarship programme ran by the university includes a tailored package of nutrition, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning alongside financial support and contribution towards fees.

The programme attracted hundreds of applications from across the world, who were narrowed down through a rigorous selection process.

Callum Jones, MMU sport performance officer who oversees the scholarship programme and helped to arrange the event, said: “Tonight the scholars get to meet the key people in their service network.

“They also get to meet the external partners and the academics from across the university to understand more about the work that we’re doing.

“Hopefully a lot of relationships will be formed and built tonight, and we have a foundation for people to really utilise the resources that we have at the university.

“We’ve got some experts in sports related fields that can really impact and enhance athletes, and we have some very high-level athletes that I’m hoping with utilise these resources.”

The bespoke package will support the scholars and encourage their academic and athletic potential with the university.
