Huge fire in Wythenshawe industrial estate after reports of ‘massive explosion’

Residents near Roundthorn industrial estate were told to stay inside after a huge fire sent large plumes of smoke into the skies.

Smoke was said to be blowing in the direction of Wythenshawe hospital

The fire blazed through two floors of an industrial unit and was reported to have started at around 9.20pm on Friday

A team of 10 fire engines were required to control the flames, crews remained at the premises until the early hours of Saturday morning.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, however local residents reported hearing a “massive explosion” as the fire took hold. 

An official investigation is underway by Greater Manchester fire and rescue service to discover the cause of the fire.

A spokesperson: “Crews arrived quickly and gained access to the property where they found a fire spreading to the first and second floor of the premises.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked hard throughout the night to tackle the blaze and successfully bring it under control using hose reels, ground monitors, a jet, and other specialist equipment and appliances.

“Crews have been damping down at the scene this morning. An investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the fire.”

In an update by the fire service, they explained that the fire is now under control. However residents are still being adviced to stay inside, as the smoke in the air is yet too clear.
