- Aim is for Platt Lane to become new base for MMU Sport and local schools
Platt Lane’s new sport hall will be opened up to the local community at an official ceremony on Wednesday.
There will be numerous events taking place on the day involving pupils from St Kintergern’s Primary school.
The aim is for Platt Lane to become the new base for MMU Sport and for local schools within the catchment areas of Moss Side, Rusholme and Longsight, increasing sports provisions and engaging younger children.
Manchester Metropolitan University’s performance sports officer Callum Jones said: “This is the latest stage of our strategy to develop professional environments for sport. The court has a sprung wooden floor and it’s state of the art, up to national standards. It will become a home for our court sports – netball, basketball and volleyball, futsal and badminton – as well an integrated sports hub.”
Manchester City’s former training ground currently has a 210-capacity, but with the capacity to increase to 1,000, meaning it will be able to host regional tournaments.
The fun kicks off at 11.30 with a community game of basketball, followed by an alumni game at 12.30pm. The ribbon cutting ceremony starts at 1.30pm and is followed by warm-up games for netball and basketball involving Liverpool JMU and Liverpool 2nds. Games continue until 8pm and include a showcase game of MMU men’s first team against the University of Worcester at 4pm.
