The contribution of higher education institutions such as MMU has launched Manchester 13 places up the league table in the QS Best Student Cities rankings.
This makes Manchester one of most improved academic destinations in the annual survey run by higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds.
Now in its fifth year, the rankings compile a range of indicators, such as affordability, graduate employer activity and safety, to reveal which are the best places worldwide for undergraduates and post-graduates.
Manchester rose from 36th position in 2016 to 23rd in 2017 and it is now only second to London in terms of the overall package UK cities offers students.
Jack Moran, of QS Quacquarelli Symonds, said: "No city, no matter how desirable a destination in other respects, will prove attractive to students without top institutions situated there.
"Manchester’s strong position this year certainly reflects its cost-of-living and quality of life, but can also be attributed to the consistently strong performance of its universities.”
The city came 3rd in the UK for university rankings, student mix, desirability and affordability.
It was second for employer activity and fourth best in a student vote.
