- University offers counselling to students and staff
The vice-chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University, Malcolm Press, has issued a statement to staff and students in response to the suicide bomb attack at the Manchester Arena.
Mr Press said he was writing in a “mood of sombre contemplation”.
“Like all of you, I am shocked by the tragic news of last night’s terror attack at the Manchester Arena, and my thoughts go out to the families and friends of everyone affected.
“This is an assault on our community designed to terrorise us. But Manchester has faced this kind of threat before, and emerged stronger and more united.
“I was immediately struck by how Manchester responded – the rapid and professional response of the emergency services and the help and support provided by members of the public to those affected by the incident.
“This says so much about the kind of city we are. We stand together and support each other. Now more than ever it is the moment for us to be strong and come together and unite in the face of adversity.”
Mr Press said that the university counselling service was on standby to help any students of staff. The helpline number is 0161 247 3493.
A book of condolence has been opened at the Town Hall.
Mr Press added: “We will remain strong, holding to the values of inclusion, tolerance and respect that are fundamental to our lives.”
