Nine year old’s bravery award for saving mother’s life

A nine-year-old girl has won a bravery award for phoning 999 after her mother suffered a seizure at the wheel on the motorway.

Lily Barber called police when she realised mum Claire, 41, was unconscious after pulling over to the side of the East Lancs road.

The nine year old was able to tell call handler Steph Bishop their location, the direction they were travelling, car type and her mum’s medical history after grabbing her mum’s mobile from her bag.

Lily’s six-year-old sister Eva was also in the car and received a bravery award from Greater Manchester Police last week.

Claire said: “I am so proud of my girls for their actions on that day and for winning this award. I have always taught them at young age what to do in an emergency and I’m so proud that they acted upon it.

“I would also like to say thank you to the call handler from the Police for keeping the girls so calm – they must have been so scared and you really helped make it a bit easier for them.”

Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said: “Lily and Eva showed real bravery and maturity when they must have been really scared about what was happening to their Mum”.

“It was a real privilege to meet Lily and Eva and present them with a Chief Constable's Commendation. They are impressive young ladies and should be very proud of what they did.”
