Hulme Grammar School alumna Sarah Lancashire CBE wins her third BAFTA for the Best Leading Actress putting Hulme back in the news.
Sarah is known for her leading role in Happy Valley as sergeant Catherine Cawood. The show landed her a BAFTA for the Best Leading Actress for the second time.
Sarah attended the Hulme Grammar School between 1976 to 1981. At the age of 17 she dropped out due to clinical depression. Since then, she has created a career by playing superb roles in gritty TV shows.
The Hulme Grammar School is a prestigious grammar school founded in 1611 with high academic standards. It is an independent school in Greater Manchester for individuals ages two to eighteen.
Sarah Lancashire’s Career
Sarah’s first roles were from the Manchester Library Theatre Company between the 1980s to 1990s. She starred in two productions: Pacific Overtured and The Beauty Game. She then went on to star in Coronation Street which her father was a script for.
Sarah had a variety of wide-ranging roles from the early 2000s to 2014. In 2014 she starred the Last Tango in Halifax directed by Sally Wainwright as she won her first BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress.
Sarah went on to star in Happy Valley also directed by Sally Wainwright winning two BAFTAs for Best Lead Actress. Her most recent win being this year at the 2024 BAFTA Awards putting Hulme back in the news.
