Elite scholars show tonight

The new intake of elite athletes who will be MMU Sports Scholars for the next year will be unveiled at a glittering webinar tonight (Thursday). 

University sports coaches have attracted elite performers in  Athletics, Basketball, Climbing, Cycling, Fencing, Football, Futsal, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lacrosse, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Swimming, Taekwondo and Water Polo. 

There are also two Snowsports scholars announced: 

Rowan Cheshire, who is studying for a BA (Hons) Sports Marketing Management and Katie Ormerod who will study for a BSc (Hons) Sport: Coaching and Development. 

Some Scholars have already taken to Twitter to post reaction to the announcement.  

Athletics scholar Leah Peploe said: “Super grateful to be selected as an MMU Sport Scholar for the 2020-21 academic year. Excited for the hard work to come with a great support system. 

Netball scholar Abby Miles, said: “Been awarded a Sport Scholarship at Manchester Metropolitan University for 2020/21 and I am truly thankful!” 

Returning scholar Steven Jones progressed onto our scholarship programme last year after securing a bronze medal at BUCS Nationals. 

Steven said: “My time on the programme has been very helpful due to its many different outlets to help improve myself. Especially through ways in which my knowledge was limited such as, nutrition and the mental aspect of competing. Having access to top class facilities with many different people has also helped to improve my high jump massively.”

Scholar and GB National water polo player Mike Patterson is part of our three-time BUCS champion Water Polo team and is getting ready to make a return this year. 

Mike said: “I have absolutely loved being a scholar this year and one of the things I’ve most enjoyed and found helpful is the extra classes put on by MMU Sport, for example the nutrition and psychology workshops. I thought it was great that the nutrition was hosted by some really knowledgeable students and gave me a lot of information that I have implemented going forward.”

Three time BUCS Champion track cyclist Georgia Holt is another one of our returning scholars for 2020/21. 

Georgia said: “Being a MMU sport scholar has helped me in so many ways, the S&C support from both Lewis and Dan is exceptional and certainly a cut above the rest. The Movement Unit have kept me in good shape with regular massages and treatment of niggling injuries.”
