Campaign To Help The Homeless In Manchester
- #HelpMCR
- NQ reporter Dylan Mitchell has launched a campaign to help ease the plight of the homeless in Manchester
- The campaign is asking students and all members of the public to make donations of essential items to support MCR Homeless Help and the Narrowgate Homeless Shelter
Winter is coming.
And while many of us have the luxury of central heating, a cosy bed and warm winter coat, there are many about to endure what will be, for them, the toughest few months of the year.
The latest statistics from homelessness charity Shelter show that in 2016, 4,428 people – the equivalent of one in every 633 people across Greater Manchester – don’t have a permanent roof over their heads. Some 189 of them are sleeping rough on the city centre streets.
The winter weather hits the most vulnerable in our society the hardest.
Speaking to the Guardian, the founder of The Big Issue, John Bird, recently warned that Britain is facing its worst winter homelessness crisis in 20 years and that ‘radical action’ is needed.
The overall aim of this appeal is to raise awareness of what you, the public, can do to help combat homelessness within the Greater Manchester area. No matter how big or small your help may be.
You can support MCR Homeless Help which has teamed up to work closely with the Narrowgate Homeless Shelter in Salford, Greater Manchester. The shelter relies on donations from the public to keep running smoothly.
And MMU students can also help make a difference. They can take toiletry donations to the reception of the Geoffrey Manton building to support the shelter’s work. A full list of the items needed can be found at https://mcrhomelesshelp.wordpress.com/help-from-mmu/ .

You can make a huge difference towards someone’s health and wellbeing.
