Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next” has been a huge worldwide hit before the video was even released. Reaching the top spot on both sides of the pond – becoming her first #1 in the United States. The video, which features cameo’s from Troye Sivan, Jennifer Coolidge and Kris Jenner was released 30th November and has amassed over 70 million views already.
The video broke the record within a matter of hours, a record previously held by Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do”. It is the first music video to surpass 50 million views in its first day and the fastest to reach the milestone. Vevo confirmed via their twitter page when the star had broken the record.
The music video was being hyped on Ariana’s twitter page for weeks leading up to the release. Teasers and promotional pictures were all over social media before the big release. The video references iconic scenes from Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, Bring It On and 13 Going 30. She managed to book Jennifer Coolidge who reprised her role from the legendary bend and snap scene from Legally Blonde. Jonathan Bennett who played Aaron Samuels in Mean Girls also reprised his role referencing Regina George’s “hair looks sexy pushed back” line.
The big surprise from the music video comes from Kardashian-Jenner media momager Kris Jenner playing Ariana’s mom in the dance scene. The moment has become an internet meme thanks to the stars appearance and her saying “thank u next b***h” at the end of the video.
Stars from the original films such as Lindsay Lohan and Reece Witherspoon have all given their praise for the music video. Watch the music video here.
