Boy, 16, dies while swimming in Salford Quays with friends

Police have repeated warnings about swimming in open water following the death of a teenage boy on Saturday.
The 16 year old is believed to have been swimming in the open water with a group of friends in the afternoon.
The teenager was seen struggling in the water at Salford Quays around 6.15pm on Saturday. Police, fire department as well as ambulances were called to begin the search for the boy.
A body was located and recovered by specialist divers later that day. Formal identification has yet to take place.
Specially-trained officers are updating and supporting the boys’ family during.
Devastating
GMP Detective Inspector Joanne Johnston said: “Yesterday evening’s events are nothing short of devastating and my thoughts are with the friends and family of the young boy who lost his life in such awful circumstances.
“We are doing all we can to support the boy’s family at this incredibly difficult time, and we are focused on ensuring they get the answers they deserve as to how this tragedy occurred.
“From our inquiries so far, we are confident that there are no suspicious circumstances and that this is such a sad reminder of the dangers of entering open water, whatever the weather.”
GMP as well as the Met Office and the NHS website have all issued warnings about the dangers of swimming in open waters, especially with the record breaking heatwave commencing this week.
