Match Report: Southampton 0-2 Chelsea

  • Chelsea move within a point of the leaders as they beat Southampton 2-0
  • Eden Hazard and Diego Costa scored for the blues as Chelsea take their winning run to four games.

Conte named an unchanged side which thumped Manchester United 4-0 last week. Bertrand returned to the Saints starting line-up, he was once a Champions League winner with Chelsea. It only took Hazard 6 minutes to break the deadlock as he cut inside Steve Davis on the right side of the Saints area and rifled in a shot in-between Forster’s legs with his left foot to give Chelsea an early lead. Courtois effortlessly kept out Southampton’s best chance of the first half as he pushed Tadic’s low free kick out for a corner. Chelsea had great chance to extend their lead as Hazard cut out on the edge of the area but could only shoot straight at the safe hands of Fraiser Forster. Costa had a huge chance to grab his first of the game in the first half but it was kept out well by Forster’s legs.

Nonetheless on the 55th minute Costa finally got his first goal of the game as he dropped deep and curled into a tremendous effort into the far side of the net from 25 yards out, assist provided by Hazard. Chelsea kept on banging on the Saint’s door with many attempts on goal but were unlucky to get a third. Moses had an attempt to which it was spilt by Forster but no Chelsea player could pounce and get a goal.

Southampton’s best chance of the day came on the 69th minute as Austin got over Cahill and got his head on to an inviting cross by Bertrand but could only fire over the post. There was 14 minutes to go when Steve Davis’s header flicked off the top of the bar. Moses once again tested Forster on the 84th minute with a superb effort by his left foot but was a bit too straight and palmed away by the Saints keeper. Southampton kept vast amounts of possession throughout the game though Chelsea had a solid defence which looked like it wasn’t to be breached today.

Next up for Southampton is a trip to the KC stadium where they will face Hull City whilst Chelsea entertain 6th placed Everton at Stamford Bridge.
