Electric scooter trial scheme to begin at the University of Salford for students on campus

An electric scooter trial scheme will begin in Salford this month after being approved by the city council. 

The scheme – in partnership with TfGM and the University of Salford – will see e-scooters available to rent in an effort to improve student mobility and increase the use of green transport.

The scooters will be provided by Lime, who provide similar services in 125 cities including Paris, Berlin and Rome. 

Phase one of the trial will begin at the Peel Park and Frederick Road campuses this month – phases two and three will be introduced next year and will connect the campus to MediaCityUK, Ordsall and the city centre. 

Councillor Mike McCusker said: “We’ve made huge advances in green transport, with the investment in electric car charging points, investment in our network of former railway lines which now provide 27 kilometres of traffic free routes for commuting and pleasure and now we’re delighted to pioneer the use of e-scooters.”

University of Salford head of strategic partnerships Mike Brown said: “I’m sure our students will welcome the use of e-scooters and I hope it will help provide some enjoyment and excitement in the return to campus during these uncertain times.”

Salford student Luca Darlington, 20, said: “This is a great scheme as it promotes green modes of travel; I can’t wait to see the scooters around campus.” 

Student Verity Brown, 26, said: “It will be interesting to see how the student body reacts to the scheme – I can’t see myself using the scooters as I think they aren’t necessary as Salford is small. They also look quite childish.” 

The scooters can be unlocked by scanning a QR code and will cost £1 to rent and 15p per minute to ride – geofencing technology will be used to ensure the scooters do not leave their designated areas or break speed limits. 

The scooters will be available to anybody over 18 who holds a provisional or full UK driving license.
