Ruben Amorim has arrived at Carrington to begin his new life as the Manchester United manager.

He leaves Sporting after beating Brest 4-2 on his final game with the Portuguese side but now he arrives in Manchester with a new task ahead of him.

Amorim will be the 10th person to be in the hot seat including interim and caretaker managers, and the sixth permanent appointment since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

United currently sit 13th in the Premier League with four wins, three draws and four losses and according to OPTA Sport who look at footballing data is one of the “worst starts” to a season that they have had.

A big part they analyse is to do with goals scored. In the 122 seasons that the club have competed in the league only once have they scored less goals after the first 10 matches, that coming way back in 1972-73.

In Contrast Amorim has led his Sporting side to 11 wins in the 11 games they have played in the league so far this season. You can see then why the United Board have chose him for the job.

Who Is Ruben Amorim?

The 39 year old played for Sporting’s big rivals Benfica as a player before working his way up the managerial ladder in Portugal before getting the Sporting Lisbon job in 2020. With Sporting he won the cup competition Taça da Liga twice and the Primeira Liga twice as well, with the first being the club’s first in 19 years.

His team recently beat Manchester City in the Champions League 4-1 after a Gyökeres hat-trick. His managerial style is described by Nick Wright for Sky Sports: “Amorim’s Sporting are characterised by a short-passing possession game, a three-at-the-back set-up and an aggressive pressing system facilitated by a high defensive line.”

Ruben’s United

Amorim will have a little bit of time to reflect on his new squad during the international break as his first game in charge of the team is away at Ipswich on 24 November.

United have an expensive squad with the club spending £205m on players over the summer and the United faithful will be hoping he can get the best out of them.

Jamie Carragher, ex-Liverpool player and now pundit for Sky Sports, highlighted one area that he thinks is a cause for concern: “What is he going to do wing-back-wise?’ Because it is a specialist position.” Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazroui played right and left back respectively during United’s last match and he suggests that they are more traditional full backs rather than wing backs, which could cause some issues.

There is also speculation from TNT sports on who Amorim could potentially sign for the club with one strong link them suggesting being Viktor Gyökeres. The big number nine plays at Sporting and scored the hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions league.

Andy Brassell a writer for the Guardian says that: “Gyökeres’ personality is what really suggests he can become a fixture at elite level.” and later goes on to say “where next for a player on such a seemingly inexorable course? The Premier League seems most likely.”

What do local’s think?

NQ spoke to some local fans who gave their say on the Amorim and United’s current situation, Raheem Razak said “they’ve got good individual players but can’t play as a team.” He brought up the players they have signed and stated that despite their pedigree they are not performing. He thinks that the biggest decision Amorim has on his hands is “who’s going?”

When asked what United needs he said “a new squad” and that “you can have the best players but if they can’t play as a team you’re not going to be good”

his friend Rayan Saleh a City fan said he was “not worried” but thinks Amorim will “turn United into a good spot.”
