‘Cass Report Opens Door To More Attacks On Trans People’
- Protest in Piccadilly gardens against the outcomes of the Cass report
- The Cass report findings detail ways the NHS needs to adapt treatment of transgender community
- Sky, a transgender teaching assistant from Salford, believes more needs to be done to help protect the trans community
The Manchester socialist workers party launched a protest against the outcomes of the Cass report.
Members of the party and the LGBTQ+ community united in Piccadilly gardens performing speeches to share their outrage.
The protest aimed to shed light on the difficulties faced by the Trans community holding ‘Trans rights now’ signs aloft.
Laura, a protester at the event said: “I want to urge everyone to think about your attitudes towards Trans and minority people and the Cass report.
“It is setting a precedent and it will not stop here. The government feel frightened by the strength of our movement and are seeking to divide us, amongst arbitrary lines of transphobia, racism and homophobia. This will not stop at the Cass report.”
The recommendations of the Cass report
Dr Hilary Cass published the report on the 9th of April 2024. The report details recommendations to the NHS on gender identity services for children and young people.
These recommendations include operating with extra caution when providing puberty blockers and ensuring regional services have a follow through service for 17-25-year-olds.
Cass also found that there is “no evidence puberty blockers provide time to think” and there is concern over how they affect “psychosexual and gender identity development.”
Response to the findings
Sky, a transgender teaching assistant from Salford said she was horrified by the findings of the Cass report.
She said: “We’ve come out to oppose the report as we think that trans kids should be protected and that trans rights are incredibly important.
“We’re pushing really hard to get self-ID so trans people can make their own decisions about their gender, like we see in Spain
Connor, a Manchester socialist workers party member said: “We need to stand out for LGBT rights, to push back against the divide and rule this government is using to try and divide us.”
He said: “If we are to hold in unity, we need to defeat this government.”
