It was as far removed from a ‘catwalk’ as you can imagine but everyone had a frightfully good time.

Dogs dressed as witches and owners dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz formed part of a spooky parade through town yesterday to celebrate Halloween.

Bloodhounds were decked out in costumes ranging from Frankenstein’s monster to the cowardly lion in the famous film.

The organisers of the Spooky Pooch Parade, Simion and Rachael, were thrilled at the turnout and inventive costumes.

Rachael said: “It’s great to get kids active in the city centre. My background is in textiles and fashion, so I have a particular interest in the costumes.”

Simion added: “Manchester is a great community anyway, so it just reinforces that.”

After watching the spooky pooches and howling hounds take to the stage for their five minutes of fame, the judges handed out prizes for best dog and owner costumes.

The crowd favourite was won by pomeranian Lola who came dressed as a witch.

This was their second year winning best in show in the spooky pooch parade.

Saffron, Zeus’ owner, said: “We actually met through Zeus three years ago and we’ve been together since.”

They walked down the catwalk with a sign telling people to adopt their furry friends and give a dog a loving home.

The smallest dog at the contest was Lucky, whio was dressed as Frankenstein by owner Sylvia.

Sylvia told the Northern Quota: “She came from Ireland. She was the runt of the litter and she nearly didn’t make it, so we stuck with the name Lucky.”
