West Didsbury community coming together to help during the pandemic

  • West Disbury has sprung into action to help support the NHS and vulnerable people in the community
  • Volunteers collect and deliver food and prescriptions
  • Local businesses offer discounts to NHS workers

Since the announcement of the lockdown, the West Didsbury community has come together to offer help and comfort to those in need of support.

The volunteer group, ‘Dear Neighbour’, was put together at the start of the pandemic and helps vulnerable people in isolation in any way possible. This may include collecting and delivering food or prescriptions or reaching out to people who need someone to talk to or to hear a friendly voice.

They collect donations for the funds needed to purchase the food and the Facebook page also addresses a wide range of issues that people may be facing during lockdown. Dear Neighbour specifically covers West Didsbury area, so if you would like to get involved and volunteer or you or someone you know would benefit from their services, go check out their website for more details.

Another business helping and adapting during COVID-19 is the popular Italian chain, Piccolino.

Piccolino in West Didsbury has launched a new collection and delivery service called ‘PICCOLINO2GO‘ with many of their classic dishes available to order. They are also offering 50% off all food included in this service for NHS and other emergency service workers on the front line. Also they are delivering sweet treats to all local care homes on a daily basis to lift the spirits of some of the people who need it most!

Another popular place in WD to indulge in pizza, Proove Pizza , have started a new campaign to help show appreciation to key workers, on social media, called #TrayADay. The idea for this is to allow anyone to nominate a team of heroes in our community that deserve a tray of pizzas for their hard work during these testing times. Proove Pizza are giving away 15 free pizzas per restaurant every week to a group of frontline workers. Their most recent delivery was to the A+E nightshift workers at Wythenshawe Hospital. More details included below of how to nominate your chosen hero!

Along with businesses providing help to our community, our community need to provide these businesses with our support too in what’s proving to be a difficult time for the economy. Most bars and restaurants have been forced to close during the pandemic and we have seen an increase in these businesses offering a collection and delivery service for their food and drinks.

Here is a map showing some of the restaurants in West Didsbury that are now offering this service to customers. So if you are missing your favourite local cuisine, you may now be able to order it instead and these places need all the support they can get right now!
