Famous derby day win for Man Met 2nds against University of Manchester

  • Man Met 2s defeat rivals Uni of Manchester 2-0 at The Armitage Sports Centre
  • They remain top of the table in the Men's Northern Tier 4 competition

Man Met FC seconds extended their perfect run of form in the league with a win against bitter rivals Uni of Manchester seconds in a well fought 2-0 victory.

Man Met went into the away game top of the league with six points from six in their opening two matches.

Meanwhile, UOM had the opportunity to knock their rivals off top spot being only two points behind after their first two games.

In the first half it was anyone’s game. Both sides had some good chances, but the pick of the bunch came for Man Met’s Fejiro Orhenomare who found himself in all sorts of space just 15 yards out from goal, but blasted the ball wide of the keepers left.

Uni of Manchester tried numerous times to exploit long balls over the top in the first half, but captain Ollie Gilbert and his defensive partners seemed to win everything in the air and made it difficult for the opposition strikers.

An edgy start to the second half saw Man Mets Tom Clare booked in the 55th minute after giving the ball away at the back and making a reckless challenge.

But Man Met soon found their feet and took the lead just 10 minutes later. A controversial decision by the referee gave MMU an indirect free kick inside the box following a back pass to the keeper.

Captain Ollie Gilbert smartly laid the ball off to his colleague, Alex Holmes, who delightfully side footed the ball into the top left corner to make it 1-0.

From this point the game seemed to open up and Man Met continued to push for a second, peppering the keeper with four or five shots in a matter of minutes.

And it wasn’t long before the pressure paid off. A through ball by substitute Richmond Kodom put Emile Hohmann clear of the defensive.

The striker then skilfully took the ball round the keeper before calmly slotting it home to make it 2-0 in the 75th minute.

With only 10 minutes to go Man Met FC looked home and dry until a second yellow for Tom Clare and injury for Tino Dosvora left them down to nine men.

But coach, Alex West and his team held on courageously until the final whistle.

Even after the distraction of a suspected broken ankle for one Uni of Manchester’s defenders which had the game stopped for half an hour as paramedics attended the scene.

The famous win keeps them top of the Men’s Northern Tier 4 table as they go into their next game, away from home, against Chester Men’s 2nd team on 17 November.
