Deadline day deal: Manchester United sign Porto’s Alex Telles in deal worth £13.5m
- Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have made their second signing of the transfer window after securing Alex Telles on five-year deal
- Ex-Manchester United player, Gary Neville, left unimpressed with United’s business during transfer window
- Fans are feeling like Telles could be answer to age-old problem
Manchester United have signed Porto left back, Alex Telles, on a five-year deal worth a reported £18m.
This brings their total transfer spending to around £60m with their first signing of Ajax midfielder, Donny van de Beek, costing £39m.
Telles comes into a United squad that are not seeing too much success at the moment – finding themselves on the receiving end of a 6-1 schooling from former Red Devil’s head coach José Mourinho and his new team, Tottenham Hotspur.
With 13 goals and 12 assists in all competitions last season, it’s no wonder the Brazilian international appeared on Solskjaer’s radar.
Despite the successful additions of Telles and van de Beek, former treble-winning Manchester United left back, Gary Neville, has been anything but happy with their performance in the transfer window.
In a tweet to his 4.2m followers he said: “It’s appalling that in this market which is probably the easiest in PL history to get transfers done that United haven’t done more yet! They must get Ole a CB, LB and Forward pre deadline! The others are managing to get things over the line why not United!”

It hasn’t been for a lack of trying, The Red Devil’s have had bids rejected on Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, whilst eyeing up Barcelona’s Osmane Dembele and PSG’s Edinson Cavani.
Whilst Gary Neville may have a point – United’s rivals Manchester City have made 3 signings in winger Ferran Torres (£20.8m) and centre backs Nathan Ake (£41m) and Ruben Dias (£65m) – one lifelong Red Devil, Troy Lydon, is optimistic about the impact Telles could have: “I don’t know too much about him, but I have heard he’s quite attacking and can create chances and finish them – something we’ve been crying out for with our current fullbacks.
“He’s not gonna solve all of our problems, but I’m hopeful he can be the quality signing we need. It’s certainly a step in the right direction and for £15m in today’s market you can’t complain.”
