Stabbing of teenage boy, 16, in the Arndale Centre was ‘an isolated incident’ say police

  • Stabbing occurred in the Arndale Centre following an altercation between two groups of teenagers
  • Police and emergency services were called to the scene
  • Boy taken to hospital with stab wounds and others treated for minor injuries

Police say that the stabbing of 16-year-old boy in the Arndale Centre was ‘an isolated incident’.

The police were called to the incident at around 7.20pm on Friday, which occurred in the Next store in the Arndale Centre.

Investigations into the incident discovered that there had been an altercation between two groups of teenagers, with one 16-year-old boy stabbed.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the boy was taken to hospital, where he was treated for injuries described as “neither life-changing or threatening”.

A couple of other teenagers were also injured and taken to hospital, though these were reported to be minor, and they have since been discharged from the hospital.

The group responsible for the attack left the scene before the police had arrived.

Inspector Glen Rees, of GMP, said the stabbing was an “isolated incident” and not indicative of a larger issue.

“We do not believe there to be any ongoing wider threat to the general public,” he said.

Inspector Rees added: “Violence such as this will not be tolerated and a full investigation is currently underway to establish the full circumstances and identify those involved.”

No one was arrested and enquiries are still ongoing. Police have asked anyone with knowledge or footage of the incident to come forward.

“This was a busy part of the city centre so I am confident there will be people out there who can help us identify those responsible,” said Insp Rees.
