Popular student bar in Fallowfield to shut its doors for good in December

  • The Font to close permanently on 15 December
  • Lease up in December and was decided not to be renewed
  • Font believe "it's not the place for us anymore"

The Font in Fallowfield has announced it will be closing its doors for the final time on 15 December after 10 years in business.

The announcement was made on the Font’s social media, leading to an outpour of sadness from past and current students alike.

While the bar will close in just under three weeks, there will still be Christmas offers throughout December, three more themed pub quizzes and ‘one last big hoorah’ on Friday, 14 December  featuring ‘DJs, cocktails and good times a plenty’.

Jude Wainwright, creative director at Font, said: “The lease was up in December and as much as we loved Fallowfield over the years, we just feel it’s not the place for us anymore. It’s a good time to move on.”

Earlier this year the Tab reported that the bar received notice of a ‘planning condition’ related to their site from the council, resulting in reduced operating hours for the business. It was claimed there ‘just isn’t the time’ to serve customers anymore.

The notice was also reported to have been received by Fallowfield’s Revolution, who called the council’s notice a ‘purge on Fallowfield nightlife’.

The bar, located opposite the University of Manchester’s Fallowfield halls of residence, is famed for its wide variety of cocktails that start at just £2. Font will continue to operating at its other two sites in the city centre and Chorlton where they are ‘putting great efforts into bringing bigger, better [and] brighter #partyvibes’.

The statement released by Font said: “It has been an absolute privilege to have been part of Fallowfield for so long and the many memories we’ve made will not be forgotten.

“The time we have spent here in Fallowfield has been enriching and fulfilling and we’d just like to take this opportunity to give the biggest thank you to all of our staff & regulars, past and present, I cannot express how much you have meant to us.”
