Manchester has welcomed the Chinese new year in – the year of the tiger – with with a selection of socially distanced celebrations.

The celebrations include an exhibition of photographs taken by Adrian Bradshaw in 1984, during his time as a university student in Beijing.

The images are a collection of both candid and posed black and white film images celebrating the growing culture of China in the mid 1980s.

They will be displayed in Manchester central library until April 26.

Other art events at the Lowry and FACT offer exhibitions of British east Asian and south east Asain, artists and theatre makers. Singing, traditional lion dances, Chinese acrobatics, and poetry readings, will taking place on Sunday (6 February) from 11am in the Chinatown Car Park.

Food stalls, a funfair and various workshops will be available to visitors.

Two films are being shown at HOME cinema in collaboration with Confucius Institute and the Chinese Film Forum UK.

A selection of short documentaries will be shown on Saunday depicting contemporary China.

A tiger built out of wood and recycled materials, created by Decordia Events and brought to Manchester by BID, will be displayed in St Ann’s Square in honour of the year of the tiger.

The tiger is supposed to represent strength, courage and bravery for the coming year. The sculpture, built to look like a children’s toy towers over passersby during the day and is illuminated at night.
