The offer includes parking bays on streets near Piccadilly Station, in Castlefield and near Whitworth Street.

Stickers will be attached on machines next to bays where parking will be free.

The Metrolink Second City Crossing will be opening in early Spring, with the Oxford Road bus priority works completed by April.

Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council’s executive member for the environment, said: “Manchester is benefiting from some of the greatest infrastructure investment the city has ever seen. The work currently being undertaken will deliver transport improvements to meet the needs of a rapidly growing city and keep us moving for decades to come."

“However, we do acknowledge that these major projects will inevitably create some short-term disruption and that’s why we're offering free parking this weekend, as a thank you to Manchester residents and visitors.

We’re also keen to support our city centre retailers, a sector which employs thousands of people – and so encouraging people to enjoy the January sales by offering free parking this weekend is a positive way to start 2017."
