Careers event gives Man Met students chance to gain work experience

  • 26 employers and organisations attended event in GM
  • Range from Army to Camp America
  • Hundreds of students attended event organised by MMU Careers

A careers event designed to help students gain work experience was attended by major employers from the region and beyond.

The Get Experience event organised by MMU Careers was held in the Geoffrey Manton building where 26 different organisations set up stalls, gave advice and promoted the vast amount of diverse opportunities on offer.

I spoke to a member of the Think Pacific team who informed me of the leadership roles you can take on as a student, leading a group of over 20 volunteers to make a difference in a rural Fijian community.

The company has introduced more than 18,000 students to extracurricular activities, invested more than 7.5m Fijian dollars into the economy and created 150 jobs for Fijian people

Education First was also at the event, promoting opportunities to teach English abroad in China and to “turn a year abroad into a lifetime of memories and make a difference to people’s lives”.

The company works in 60 cities with 300 schools.

The local Army reserve told me that being part of the reserves can mean getting paid work for a commitment that can be as little as 27 days a year.

I spoke to an MMU student, Niamh, 19, who attended the event, who said: “The fair is very useful and it’s great as young people to have so many different opportunities available to us.”

Other organisations in attendance ranged from Camp America, who offer the chance to go to America and work as a camp counsellor in a summer camp for nine weeks and to “experience the real America with people from all over the world”, to Youth Fed who support young people between eight 25 through youth programmes. They were recruiting for a variety of NCS roles based across Cheshire, Halton and Wirral.
