Businesses and residents evacuated after unexploded tank cartridge found in Spinningfields

A number of streets in Spinningfields were temporarily closed off and businesses and residents were evacuated this morning after reports of an unexploded tank cartridge being found.

The cartridge was found shortly before 11am on a construction site on New Quay Street.

Police set up a cordon around the area and closed off parts of Quay Street and Water Street.

Specialist military officers could be seen at the scene removing the cartride from the ground.

Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers are currently responding to reports that an unexploded tank cartridge had been found in Manchester city centre.”

An officer at the scene confirmed to the Northen Quota that the Army were in the process of checking whether the cartridge was live.

GMP issued an update on Twitter this afternoon stating that the cartridge had been safely removed.
