Man City retain Premier League title after 4-1 victory at Brighton

  • Man City retain Premier League after winning the title last year
  • Their tally of 98 points is the second best ever, after their tally of 100 last season
  • They needed a win to finish ahead of Liverpool (who got 97 points)

Manchester City have been crowned Premier League champions for the second year running following a 4-1 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Citizens finished one point above Liverpool who beat Wolves 2-0 on the final day, meaning City needed a victory on the South Coast.

Shortly after Liverpool took the lead against Wolves, Murray scored for Brighton against City which may have shaken the belief of some fans.

Their doubt would not have lasted long, however, as Sergio Aguero replied one minute later at the other end.

Laporte made sure the visitors took the lead before half time, heading in from a corner.

City put the game to bed in the second half with a third from Mahrez and a sublime free kick to wrap things up from Gundogan.

City were able to climb to the top of the table after Liverpool dropped points with a 0-0 draw at Everton on March 3rd and both teams have won every league game since. In fact Liverpool’s tally of 97 points is the third-highest the Premier League has ever seen behind City’s 98 this season and 100 last season.

It has been truly remarkable that both teams have managed to maintain such a good record all season; Liverpool’s only league defeat came at the hands of City in January, and what a difference that made!

Noel Gallagher joined the players in the dressing room afterwards as they sung Gallagher’s Oasis hit, Wonderwall.

City manager Pep Guardiola said this victory was the toughest title he has won in his career. “It’s incredible, 98 points, to go back-to-back. We made the standard higher last season and Liverpool helped us. To win this title we had to win 14 (league games) in a row. We couldn’t lose one point.”

Brighton sacked their manager Chris Hughton earlier this morning following the defeat and another season barely surviving relegation.

Liverpool were 10 points clear at the top at Christmas, but an incredible 14 game winning run from City to that final game meant they managed to clinch the title.

Man City play in the FA Cup final on Saturday against Watford as they attempt to claim the domestic treble and their Premier League victory parade will take place on Monday 20th.
