The Manchester Open Exhibition opened up this week – for the second time ever – in HOME cinema.

The exhibition, which is open and free to the public, presents more than 400 art pieces submitted by the residents of Greater Manchester.

More than 2,000 art pieces were submitted and selected specially by a judging panel to be put into the exhibition.

The artworks range in medium, showing paintings, sculptures, prints, photography as well as audio and video pieces. Displayed are pieces from people of all backgrounds and experience in making art.

The participating artists span geographically from 10 boroughs across Manchester, the two cities of Manchester and Salford, as well as Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan.

Artist Maria Jackson told Northern Quota: “It was great to get a chance to show my art as I didn’t have that opportunity at university during COVID”.

The Liverpool artist has just graduated with a degree in fine art and art history at the Manchester School of Art. Her sculptures, part of a two part piece named I Tried and Failed to Collect Up All Your Tears, have been shortlisted for the five final awards.

The exhibition is an open competition, with five awards; The Granada Foundation Gallery Award, Castlefield Gallery: Artist Professional Development Award 1 and 2, and the Castlefield Gallery: Artists Professional Development Award 50+.

Visitors are given the chance to vote for their favourite three pieces, and the winner is granted the People’s Choice Award.

The open awards will be returning five of the artist’s bursaries at a value of £2,000. All five winners will also receive a tailored artists development package managed by Castlefield Gallery and HOME to invest into their practice.

All of the art is numbered and corresponds to the list that is given out at the beginning of the exhibition, which displays the title of every piece as well as the artists and the price of the artwork. All of the artworks are available for purchase in the box office of the cinema on a first come first served basis.

The Manchester Open Performance Evening, which is a part of the exhibition, will present an evening of live performance curated from the open call, on 10 March. Tickets are not yet for sale but will be on the website soon.

The exhibition is available to visit from now until the 27th March 2022, through online booking only.
