Specs For Students Launch

Specs For Students is a campaign for free eye care costs for university students.

Free eye tests and vouchers for glasses stop at age 18 unless you’re in full time education. But according to the NHS being a university student doesn’t equate to full time despite being in classes up to 5 days a week.

We don’t think students should be hit with the costs of eye tests and glasses until they at least have the opportunity to get a full time job.

If we don’t do anything about our eyes while we are young, they will get worse as we age. With huge costs standing in the way, there is no incentive to get your eyes sorted from a younger age.

Children these days have worse eyesight nowadays due to high amounts of screen-time they face while growing up. This is one of the biggest contributing factors of myopia (short-sightedness) in people under 21 according to a study from last November in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.

Your eyes stop changing and growing by the time you are 21 so it is vital that these problems are seen to before it is too late.

This affects most students who will have grown up surrounded by screens and more needs to be done by universities and the NHS to help prevent the nation’s eyesight getting worse.

Get the word out and sign the petition below so we can raise awareness. With enough signatures we can send it to the health secretary to get the point across.
