Blanketman release new single as they prepare for live shows in early 2021

  • Harold is band's third single of 2020
  • Debut EP National Trust'out in March
  • Return to live shows set for February

The new track from Manchester alternative fourpiece Blanketman is out now, the band’s third release of 2020.

Latest single Harold is available on all streaming platforms, via PIAS.

It follows Taking You With Me, which came out in March, and October’s Beach Body.

Harold is the first track by the group to feature lead vocals from guitarist Daniel Hand, with usual frontman Adam Hopper offering backing vocals .

“The lyrics just seemed to fit a bit more to my voice – I mean, it’s about my own sleep paralysis,” said Hand.

“It is a bit disconcerting hearing myself back on the record though.”

The chiming guitars in the song’s opening moments are reminiscent of Beach Body, but Hand’s gentle, George Harrison-esque vocals make for a much more hypnotic record when compared with Hopper’s more energetic performance on the previous release.

Lyrically, Harold addresses the themes of isolation, bad dreams and night terrors, through the title character, who is described by Hand as his ‘sleep paralysis demon’.

The track marks the end of a busy year for Blanketman. Despite the lack of gigging and periods of lockdown and travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the band’s output has been solid and consistent, culminating in the three singles, hours of studio sessions and even airtime on Radio 1.

2021 is on course to be an even busier year . Fans are eagerly awaiting the band’s upcoming EP, National Trust, set to be released March 19.

Tentatively planned for February is the group’s return to live performing, at Belgrave Music Hall in Leeds on February 27. The show will be their first in 12 months.

“As far as I’m aware, everything is still all set to go ahead in Leeds,” said Hand.

“We’re looking forward to getting back out there as things slowly start to go back to normal.”

The band are also booked to play the Neighbourhood Weekender in Warrington in May.

Harold proves beyond doubt that Blanketman are a band who deserve our attention. In terms of musicianship, the four members are, individually, faultless; particular attention should be paid to the drumming prowess of Leicester-born Ellie-Rose Elliott.
