MMU climb the BUCS ranking in the run up to Christmas

As we approach the winter break many of Manchester Met sport teams played in their final BUCS Wednesday fixtures of the opening term.

Women’s Lacrosse finished the term on a high after a close 12-8 win against Lancaster to move into second place in Northern 2A.

Mimi Skeet, Women’s Lacrosse Chair, said: “We got off to a great start and at half-time we were six goals ahead. “Lancaster came back fighting, pressuring out defence and almost caught up with us but in the last 15 minutes we came back strong and secured a 12-8 win.

“Man of the match goes to Colleen for some amazing interceptions and goals.”

Another team finishing the first term well was Men’s Rugby Union.

The first team increased the pressure on struggling Chester 1s side with a huge 50-10 victory. Rugby Union 1s now sit second in Northern 2A as they push for promotion.

Rob Jones, Men’s Rugby Union 1st team coach and rugby development officer, said: “We expected to win comfortably and we did 50-10. “It wasn’t the performance we wanted but the emphatic result was never in question. We have now scored far superior points than our promotion rivals University of Liverpool and all our focus is on beating them on the 15th of Feb.

“The lads now go into their testing period with Joe Collins, our strength and conditioning coach, prior to the festivities where their fitness, strength, power and speed will be recorded and compared September's results. “Each player will receive their mid season assessment and be given something to work on over Christmas."

Men’s Rugby Union 2s played local rivals Salford as they chase down Liverpool 3s in Northern 4A. In a tight affair, the 2s recorded a 19-14 win over Salford 1s.

Men’s Table Tennis finished the term unbeaten and in a commanding position in Northern 3A. They beat Liverpool 2s 10-7 in a top of the table clash to consolidate first place and their promotion aims.

The Netball 4th and 5th teams faced each other in a cross campus clash this week. Netball 4s, from the Manchester campus, beat the 5th team 46-21 to go level on points with Liverpool at the top of Northern 5A.

In football news, Men’s Football 1s continue their promotion chase after drawing with Chester 2-2. The 1s came from behind twice to take a crucial point in Northern 3A.

The 3s were 2-0 down with 15 minutes left to play against Liverpool 4s. They superbly managed to turn the game on its head and record a 3-2 win to take all three points.

Unfortunately, Rugby League could not overcome a visiting Leeds side as they dropped to a 28-18 defeat. Jack Carter, Social Media Secretary, said: “It was a close game, MMU got on the scoreboard early and through great support play sent Carter in under the sticks.

“MMU led throughout the game but dropped off towards the end with an increasing penalty count. We were very physical all the way up to the last minute.

“It’s a hard loss but we stuck in and played hard for each other until the end.”

Women's Tennis fell to a 8-4 loss away to Liverpool whilst Men's Badminton 1s were held to a 4-4 draw to Liverpool John Moores.

MMU Golf 2s beat Keele 6-0 as they close in on league leaders Liverpool. MMU have a game in hand in Northern 3A and only trail Liverpool by three points.

From the MMU Cheshire campus, Men’s Basketball faced top of the league side Lancaster 1s. In a quite astonishing game MMU won 73-72 as they upset Lancasters unbeaten season. The victory ensures MMU move away from the relegation places and puts them in an excellent position for next term.

Women’s Hockey 1s finished the term unbeaten with five strong victories against the sides in Northern 2A. In their latest win they beat second placed Lancaster 7-0 to move five points clear at the top of the league.

Men’s Rugby Union faced University of Manchester 2s in a hotly anticipated game in Northern 3A. Men’s Rugby Union won the game 20-14 as they finish the first term on a high.

In Northern 6C, Men's Football 7s put seven goals past Salford 3s in a clash at the top of the league. The game finished 7-2 to MMU, who move one point clear at the top of the table.

MMU are closing in on the University of York in the BUCS rankings, MMU are currently 39th with 711 points.
