MMU fashion art students feature in i-D magazine as part of focus on young talent in the north

  • MMU students work selected to feature in i-D magazine
  • North: Fashioning Identity displayed at Somerset House, London until 4 Feb

The work of fashion art students at MMU are being featured in renonwned fashion magazine i-D magazine.

The magazine set a live brief to create 12 images, with personal ties and connections to the north and the best were oicked to appear in i-D.

The project was organised in connection with the photography exhibition, North: Fashioning Identity, curated by Adam Murray and Lou Stoppard. It is on display until 4 Feb at Somerset House in London.

Oliver Perry, fashion art direction student, incorporated old family photographs and polaroids from the 70’s. He said:  “I chose to incorporate elements of my life that have always been significant to me: the city of Preston and family.

"I never got the chance to meet my grandma, so these photos really helped me to connect with her, as I was able to get a sense of her personality in the photos.

"It may seem strange, but there was just something about the pictures that really resonated with me. At that point, I knew I had to include the photos into my project somehow – it wasn’t even an option.”

Another MMU student, Noah Redman Bennett, took a different approach. He explores coming out in the north after moving to Manchester at the age of 19.

He said his favourite part of the project was “to be able to work on a project which I connect with on such a personal level, looking at my own life and my personality and turning that into something creative and exciting.”
